Critical illness cover (CIC) is a long-term insurance policy designed to pay a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a serious medical condition. These include a heart attack, stroke, cancer, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s and many others.
It is important for dentists to have critical illness cover in order to alleviate ongoing financial commitments. This cover can be both for personal protection and partner protection if you own a dental practice.
We will always look to attach an additional benefit to the CIC product called total and permanent disability benefit (TPD). This provides cover in the case of you losing a limb, eye or digit for example.
As a dental professional we will only consider products which offer TPD on an own occupation basis. This means you would receive the benefits if you were unable to work in your current role in dentistry regardless of whether you could work in some other capacity. A policy written with TPD on any other basis would not pay out in this instance as it may be deemed that you can work in some other capacity.
We offer specialist advice in this area and will always ensure the correct type of policy and the correct level of cover is selected.
